Brijesh Tiwari (Ireland)

Role of novel technologies for ensuring resilient food production systems

Dr. Brijesh Tiwari is a Principal Research Officer in the Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ashtown, Dublin. His primary research interests relate to novel food processing, extraction and preservation technologies, with a strong focus on investigation of biochemical and microbial kinetics in food products. The investigation of technological aspects (nutritional, microbial, enzymatic and chemical inactivation phenomena) in thermal and non-thermal processing studies is of particular interest in his research.

Young Hae Choi (The Netherlands)

Metabolomics in food assessment

Young Hae Choi is an Associate Professor in Leiden University (Leiden, The Netherlands) since 2014, Scientific Director of Metabolomics Facility of Leiden University (Plant Metabolomics Unit), and Visiting Professor in Université de Picardie, Amiens, France. His research covers natural products chemistry, metabolomics, green technology and biosynthesis. He has been author/co-author of over 250 scientific peer-reviewed papers and 14 book chapters.

Mia Eeckhout (Belgium)

The insects as a novel protein source in food and feed

Mia Eeckhout is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University. Her area of expertise is animal feed technology. The research topics within her group cover the use of novel protein sources into feed as well as the valorization of food byproducts in animal feed. She already performed research on the use of insects for poultry and pigs, and manages a project on valorization of potato-waste streams in animal feed.

Giovanni Dinelli (Italy)

Traditional food: functional properties and perspectives

Giovanni Dinelli is a Full Professor at the University of Bologna since 2014, Coordinator of the PhD program in Agricultural Sciences, and Director of the training course on Organic Agriculture. His research interests are focused on the various forms of low-impact agriculture, with particular emphasis on the environmental impact and the effect on human health. Currently his research focuses on the theme of winter cereals and legumes. He is engaged in national (BIOADAPT, BIOVANT, SAVE) and international (FOODSTAR, DIVERSIFOOD, GREAT LIFE) research projects. He is the author of over 100 papers in international journals with impact factor.

Marit Kvalvåg Pettersen (Norway)

Food Packaging design –for reduced food waste and sustainable development

Dr. Marit Kvalvåg Pettersen is a Senior Research Scientist at the Nofima Food Research Institute. She also holds a position as Associate Professor at the University of Life Science in Ås. As an experience research scientist she is responsible for managing the packaging research field of the Strategic Research Program FoodMicro-Pack at Nofima. She has been manager of several research projects (national and European) and currently is the manager of national projects with several industry partners focusing on packaging technology in relation to sustainability and circular economy; food waste and material selection for increased recyclability. She was a member of ETP “Food for Life” Scientific Working Group for Food packaging and have participated and member of the Management Committee in different COST actions in relation to packaging.

Michael Sulyok (Austria)

Exploring the limits of LC-MS/MS based multi-toxin analysis: Is it really quantitative?

Michael Sulyok is Head of Laboratory at the Department IFA-Tulln, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna. His research interest covers the development of LC-MS/MS based methods for the simultaneous determination of hundreds of mycotoxins and fungal metabolites and its application. Special emphasis is put on the characterization of the analytical performance of those methods in view of accuracy, which is also reflected in the title of the presentation: Exploring the limits of LC-MS/MS based multi-toxin analysis: Is it really quantitative?

Mian N. Riaz (USA)

High moisture meat analog (HMMA) with pulse proteins-peas, lentils, and faba beans

Dr. Mian N. Riaz is the Head of Extrusion Technology Program, and graduate faculty in the Nutrition and Food Science Department at Texas A&M University, USA. Since 2005, he has been serving as the Director of the Process Engineering R&D Center (formally Food Protein R&D Center). He has published 5 books, 22 chapters and more than 100 papers on extrusion and other related topics. Three of his books are in the area of extrusion, Extruders in Food Application, Extruders and Expanders in Pet Food, Aquatic and Livestock Feeds and Extrusion Problem Solved. Every year he organizes 5 short courses in the area of extrusion. Three of these courses are related to feed and two are related to food extrusion.

Elke Anklam (Belgium)

The EC Knowledge centre on food fraud and food quality

Ms. Anklam is a chemist by education with specialization in food, organic and radiation chemistry. Since 1991 she has been working in the European Commission's Joint Research Centre. She was Director of the Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (JRC-IHCP) in Ispra, Italy (2002-2012), and Director of the JRC's Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (JRC-IRMM) in Geel, Belgium (2013-2016). In July 2016 she became the Director of the Health, Consumers and Reference Materials Directorate in Geel, Belgium.

Ilija Đekić (Serbia)

Scientific challenges in performing life-cycle assessment in the food sector

Dr Ilija Djekic is currently an associate professor at the Department of Food Safety and Quality Management in the Faculty of Agriculture - University of Belgrade. His main research interest is food industry performance in the quality and environmental fields, focused on applied, field research. During his research activities he participated in seven international projects and six national projects. He has (co-)authored more than 150 full papers where 50+ papers are included in the © ISI Web of Knowledge. He also published three chapters and five books in his area of expertise.

Milica Pojić (Serbia)

Innovative food product development cycle

Dr. Milica Pojić is a Principal Research Fellow in the Institute of Food Technology, University of Novi Sad, Serbia. Her primary research interests relate to new food product development, especially in terms of novel and alternative food ingredients and methods and techniques for engineering food products and processes. Currently she is coordinating H2020 project Innovative food product development cycle: Frame for stepping up research excellence of FINS – FOODstars.

Angelantonio D’Amario (Belgium)

Angelantonio D’Amario is a M.Sc. in Agriculture and Environment. Since 2016 he has been working as a food policy and sustainability advisor. He is also a consultant for the UECBV. His area of expertise is food labelling and quality, consumers claims, Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), packaging, Circular economy, nutritional value, GHG emissions and wastewater (IED-forum), by-products.

Giuseppina Avantaggiato (Italy)

The MycoKey approaches to mitigate mycotoxins in feeds

Giuseppina Avantaggiato holds a MSc (cum laude) in Biochemistry at the University of Bari. Since 1995 she is a research scientist at the Institute of Sciences of Food Production (ISPA) of the National Research Council (CNR). Her researches include the determination of natural toxins and pathogens in foods and feed commodities: validation, confirmation and implementation in routine of official and alternative methods for identification and detection of xenobiotics; and modelling and thermodynamics of surface-toxin interactions on composite materials. Her current research is focused on the application of decontamination strategies for the reduction of the exposure of farm animals to xenobiotics, based on the use of biological agents (bacteria, yeasts and enzymes) and adsorbent materials (clays, phytogenic substances, plant extracts) as feed ingredients.

Mario Giordano is full professor at the Dept of Life and Environmental Sciences, Polytechnic University of Marche. His research interests cover C, N, S metabolism in algae, resource and energy partitioning within algal cells, functional evolution of algae, biotechnological utilization of algae. He also works on global climate changes and their impact on algal physiology and evolution.
